O' frabjous day!!!

2009.07.03

I got to meet my favourite poet, Gulzar last evening. It rendered me speechless. Thank God for the camera.
Placed below is a translation of one of his poems....
Love the man to pieces.

No sound of your arrival, no clue to your departure.
When do you come? When do you leave?
Sometimes in the courtyard . . .
when the tamarind tree
stirs in the wind,
a sprinkling of shadow
stipples the brick walls
and is absorbed,
like water drops hurled
by someone on parched earth.
In the courtyard the sunshine sobs unhurriedly.

In closed rooms . . .
when the flame of the lamp flickers,
a vast silhouette devours me, gulp by gulp.
Eyes stare at me fixedly
from a distance.
When do you come? When do you leave?
You are in my thoughts so many times in a day.

megaera I think there is something hysterically funny about introducing a serious poet with a title that is going to have me reciting the Jabberwocky in my head all day. I actually wondered if that was a man reading Through the Looking Glass!
But I do know how you feel; I met my favourite living poet once, and he actually asked my opinion on something. I was transported

Oweena Did you get to hear him read his work?
I always like poetry read aloud.
Oweena · 2009-07-03: 10:43

SoulCurry Oweena, the best thing about Gulzar (apart from his wonderful poetry) is his deep baritone voice. Everyone was in transports of delight to hear him read out his work....
Sheesh, I wish poets had groupies!

JenPat You could start a trend and become the first Poet Groupie, Soul.
