The Orange Order Project

2008.11.19

Hello viewer!

Thank-you for taking your tiem to look at my photographs. It's greatly appreciated. I just thought I would take a bit of time now to explain what my project is about.

The Orange Order remembers the victory William of Orange, the Dutch prince, over James 2nd to rule England, Scotland and Ireland in the Glorious Revolution of 1688. In particular, the Institution remembers the victories of William 3rd and his forces in Irelan in the early 1690s, especially the Battle of the Boyne. I wanted to show this in my work but show how wide spread the Orange Order is in Northern Ireland. The locations of the Orange Halls is unbelievable. They are scattered all over the province and are dissimilar from one another. This inspired me to photograph every Hall possible. I found fifty-five Orange Halls, the majority of them being in Co.Antrim, my home county. I know there's hundred out there and to be honest, I was willing to find them. However, that came to a hault. A guest photographer called Clive Landen explain to me the idea was to simple. Anyone could do it. But only a few could photograph the inside of them......I knew what he was getting at. Only a selected few get to go inside these Halls and that's only the Protestant community (You have to be Protestant to join the Orange Order). People can drive past them everyday but don't know what they look like from within. I had the contacts to get into these places and I should have thought of getting inside them to start of my idea. The plan now (and still is) is to show the viewer what lies within these Orange Halls. Show how each one differs but still worship the same cause.......

Thank you very much for viewing my work so far. It means a lot. If possible, could you please comment on my work and let me know how you feel about it? I just want to see how people outside of the country see it and how it strikes them. Thank you again.
