Chidambaram is a temple complex spread over 40 acres in the heart of the city. It is also called as thillai temple. It is a classical Shiva temple as per Agama rules will have five prakarams (closed precincts of a temple) or circuits each separated by walls one within the other. The temple sculptures depicting the Thillai trees dates back to the 2nd century AD.
