This is a photomicrograph of a butterfly wing I found in the corner of our garage today. It's from a Red Admiral (Vanessa atalanta).
Standard method, handheld Sony DSC-U30 viewing through a surplus microscope, illuminated by a desk lamp.
As you can see the patterns on the wings are made up of tiny coloured scales, much like a decorative roof.
