Flutterbies - encore, en plusieur fois.

2009.08.23
A Small Tortoiseshell butterfly (Aglais urticae), one of the prettier UK species IMO. The butterflies from this post are all taken with the 400D.

The last UK orchid of the year is Autumn Lady's Tresses (Spiranthes spiralis). It's an easy ident due to the way the flowers spiral up the stem, hence the scientific name.

Now there's a lull until next April when the Early Purple and Miltary Orchids will put in an appearance as the first orchids of the new year.

My second Clouded Yellow sighting of the year, and my second ever UK sighting. I was chatting to someone else, and he'd seen a Clouded Yellow that day too, but at another reserve. Clearly it's a very good year for migrant butterfly species!

Christmas Pie. Interesting place name, no it's not a Photoshop hack-job, the sign really does exist. More on the etymology of the place can be found here. Taken with the ZN5.

It's the end of the native orchid season here now, Autumn Lady's Tresses (Spiranthes spiralis) is the last species that'll flower this year. It's a pretty and delicate little flower, the entire spike is usually only around 5cm (2in) tall; in very favourable conditions they may grow to 20cm, but even then the individual florets will still only be a millimetre or two across.

If you're interested, I have more butterfly shots -here-
