Many of the hilltribe people chew betel nut and as a result from doing this their teeth turn dark red or black and eventually dissolve.
Betel nut,when chewed with tobacco and other ingredients creates a narcotic high. |
The men in this tribe do not dress as elaborate as the women.

The Akha Hilltribe people live mostly in Thailand but extend from Burma,Lao,china,and Tibet. Dressed in beautiful clothing that is adorned in silver coins,beads,shells,and colored with natural dyed cloth,and serve as an everyday dress.they live in the high elevations of northern Thailand.they speak their own language as well as Thai.their villages are mostly self-sufficient and still live much the same as their ancestors before them.the Akha people are beautiful and generally happy people and welcome outsiders such as myself. I thank them for my many encounters with them and allowing me to photograph them in their daily existence. There are six major hill tribes within Thailand - Akha, Lahu, Karen, Hmong/Miao, Mien/Yao and Lisu,and each one has a distinct language and culture.
