Portugal Day 3 - Castelo de Sao Jorge

2007.08.08
The barbican in front of the main castle wall and the causeway across the dry moat.

It was great how the ramparts and stairways along the citadel walls were so well preserved and restored.

And of course, no castle is complete without at least one big gun.

Excellent views of the city and the Ponte 25 de Abril over the Rio Tejo with the Cristo-Rei monument lined up in the background. I only wish I had a better camera.

Room with a view.

Naughty boy's room.

Preen

I've always had a soft spot for castles but the Castle of St George was just a bit different and special. Despite it being in the middle of the city and an obvious major tourist attraction, I felt transported back in time as I wandered along the walkways from tower to tower. It would have been so easy to have given the whole place a commercial makeover but the relative absence of placards and exhibits made me feel as if the original essence and character of the castle had not at all diminished through the ages. If Tolkien ever had an inspiration for the Hornburg, this must have been close to it.

Lisboa, Portugal. 18th June 2007. Ixus 700.
