Science Fair Project

2008.03.04
In water the egg inside is expanding.

In vinegar (acetic acid). It is removing the shell (calcium carbonate) releasing a gas (carbon dioxide), hence the bubbles.

The shell is removed and you can see the remnants of it on the sides of the jar.

The boy and his egg.

All that's left of the raw egg is the membrane which is holding it all together. The egg feels like rubber.

Adding an egg to vinegar.

Anyone hungry??

Egg in water expanding.

Carbon dioxide forming around the egg in vinegar.

After 48 hours a couple more bubbles have formed on the egg in water.

The egg looks like pearls.

Boy, did my macro come in handy with this project.

This is my 9 yo son's Science Fair Project. It's showing what happens to an raw egg when you put it in water or vinegar for 24 hours. It was a lot of fun to watch the progress.

lexlevans hehe - science experiments are so much fun! looks like your son had a good time too. i loved how the egg feels after being in vinegar. don't you just want to throw it and watch it bounce and then smash it?? haha, i do!

great set documenting this - i love #1 and #14. eggs are fun! :-)

MHJphotos Wow TCC! The detail from your macro lens is OUTSTANDING! I realize some of these shots were over a 2 day period, but how long did it take for the vingar to completely remove the shell?! That was cool! The bubbles in these shots are uber cool!

Doesn't Macro Rock?!
