Seafood at Gayang Restaurant

2008.12.01
I love love love boiled/steamed prawns!! When the prawns are as fresh as these are, this is the way to have them!

And don't even think of using your forks and spoons! Fingers de-shell better!

The outsides are nice - but its the insides are lovely!

These shells are called Siput Tarik ("Pull Shells" - and now you know why! You gently and almost skillfully pull a bit of the flesh with a toothpick and you've got to do it well 'cos if you lose your grip on the flesh, it goes all the way back in and you've lost that one! Here, my colleague couldn't be bothered with toothpicks! The moment she picked the flesh, she yanked it out with her fingers!

Siput Tarik - you dip the flesh in a mixture of lime, garlic and chopped small, fire chillies (which I couldn't find in the States!). Even the Chinese restaurants didn't know what I was talking about!

Nothing like coconut water to cool you down!

Steamed Talapia in Nyonya Sauce. Part of it has been eaten - I wasn't able to take it whole 'cos my fingers were still de-shelling prawns! haha!

Deep fried soft shell crab - believe me - these are GOOD! So very good!

Soft shell crab :-)

Don't worry - after all that - an exclusive sink by the swamp to wash your hands :-)

My friends, inside Gayang.

Going back to work.

Happy and contented :-)) But not very productive at work after that heavy meal!

Friends and I had a seafood lunch at the Gayang Restaurant last week. Its an open aired restaurant built on stilts above a mangrove swamp. Kota Kinabalu has a number of very good seafood restaurants but I like Gayang best because of its location (far away from the city) and its surrounding (the swamps).
