Day 2 - My first day assaulting London Proper

2007.09.07
OK, after actually sleeping for the first time in 72 hours, I went out on the town. Took the tube to England. this is a statue of Richard I, outside of parlaiment. I was gonna take pictures of the guards, but they had guns...big automatics!

Westminster Abbey from the front. $20 entrance. Very peaceful, despite the fact you are surrounded by dead people. Beautiful tombstones. Life size with angels, cherubs, hand carved marble, but alas, no photos allowed!

The cloisters. the only part of the abbey you can take pictures of (Note: there are 2 illegal pictures following. If I come up missing, it may be due to a Westminster Abbey/Da Vinci Code conspiracy. Or I might be lost...

OK, I HAD to take this picture. (Look up Westminster abbey to see pics on the inside for reference so you get what I'm talking about.) This is like a huge crazy immense gothic pointy spired church with hundreds of tombs for people from the Queen to Wordsworth to Isaac Newton. the coronation throne for the last 1000 years resides in this church. Nuff said? Big, holy, gothic, awe inspiring... In this church are dozens of doors, hundreds of years old, which have been graced by kings. One of these doors (above) is the OLDEST door in Britain (1000 years old). Lighting this door is a $20 torchiere lamp from Target!

2nd Illegal picture. Total accident. thought I was still in the Cloisters. Had two fend off 20 monks Shaolin style to keep my camera (actually they were very nice.) Anyway this picture is a stained glass window that was destroyed in WWII, and was remade using the same glass (like giant jigsaw puzzles!) I thought that was pretty cool, so I risked life and limb to smuggle this picture out. For you guys...

Josh and Drew. Masters in engineering at Stanford and hostel bunkmates. Invited me out for the day. Nice guys and had a prety good handle on the city (they had maps and everything. (What fun is that!)

The London eye. $50. for a ferris wheel. Actually it's slower than a ferris wheel. . No music, no 200 foot drops, corkscrews or waterslide... I don't think so. I guess Busch Gardens has made me jaded...

Queueing up for wild boar bangers and rocket on a bap. I'll give you a dollar to translate that!!!

Translation: Waiting in line for a $7 sausage sandwich with lettuce on a roll. Wash that down with a $4 Coke and you have yourself a lunch!

Here is Tower Bridge.Next to the tower of London, where they keep the crown jewels (going there 2moro.) the crown jewels have 2,876 diamonds, almost as many as my mom...;)

Me casing the back side of the Tower of London to get more diamonds for my mom. Items for heist: a grappling hook, a rope, someone who can climb a rope, bag for the diamonds, getaway car, driver who can actually drive on the left side of the road.

OK, if you are cheap, you can go to the monument on Monument Street, off of the Monument tube exit. you can climb the monument and see ALL of London. Or at least you can, if it was OPEN!!! Grrrr. So no view of London. I'm sure you can find one on the internet, I mean, you're already there, just type in view of london in Google. What do you want from me?!?

I'm finally getting the hang of it, then they close the whole circle line (I had NOTHING to do with it!) So I had to take 4 trains to get back to the hostel...Tune in tomorrow as I see the crown jewels and watch the England/Israel football/soccer match in a real live pub!
