Ron, those are beehives. Kodanad is situated amidst a rare ecosystem called Tropical Dry Ever Green Forest, which is locally called as Shola forests. This eco system is on the verge of extinction, slowly at least. Conservation has been going on, at a much slower level than the extinction! These Shola forests have a rare flower called Kurinchi, which blossoms once in 12 years. These beehives collect those spl nectar from Kurinchi flowers (... the resulting honey is not only a rarity, and also valued very high medicinally)

That lake in the background is the Bhavanisagar. The lake of the dam built on the tributary of Cauvery called Bhavani.
