this is how the black tea, the raison d'etre of the chai - a hot tea which is widely and popularly drunk in India along with milk and sugar, and some times with masala too - is processed in a Tea Factory near Ooty ...

the freshly harvested tea leaves arrive, to be air dried for 48 hours, are machine cut, toasted in a wood fired oven, then gets crushed, and sorted all along its way to the bulk packs...

the planter gets Rs 10 per KG or so for his raw produce, while the factory gets approximately Rs 60 - 80 per KG after processing; the yield would be 25 - 40 % depending on the quality of the leaves and the season its harvested...
