On Thursday night, at dusk, I felt like having steamed crabs (one of my favourite dishes). Initially, we decided to go to a zi char near my place in Chai Chee. But on that particular day, they only had one miserable looking female crab left. I'm not a particular fan of roe and the crab looked rather lifeless (which is ironic cause we were going to eat it) so we decided to give the zi char a miss.
We instead ended up going to
Ponggol Choon Seng Seafood restaurant along Upper Changi Road North.
What turned out initially to be a good idea turned quite bad at the end of the meal and beyond.
This restaurant is actually quite famous and established having opened in Ponggol in 1956 near the jetty.
All the food items were excellent and we enjoyed the dinner,
during the dinner, very much.
However, when we paid the bill, I gave my UOB Card which promised a 10% discount off
all ala carte items. Which is good because the 3 items we had including a lime juice cost, before the discount, 85 dollars or thereabouts.
However, when I got the bill back, after they rang up the till and brought the chit to me, they informed me that 10% is for
all ala carte items
except the crab.
Now, I don't mind that if they had told me beforehand. However, I find it exceedingly sneaky that they should do so after the bill has been rung up. And of course, the crab was the most expensive item at $35. I check the UOB website after and it clearly said 10% off ala carte without conditions.
The other issue is that both SC and I are very susceptible to
MSG attacks and clearly the place was loaded with it. So much so that sleep was difficult that night and I still woke up with dry lips and thirsty the next morning.
Was the food good - yep.
Would I repeat this - nope.
Would I recommend this place - never.
Next stop - making our own steamed crabs :-)
