Lunch with Chazza and David

2008.06.25

Regular catch up with these two gentlemen. We used to meet in the evenings but David just got another gift of a daughter recently and being the good husband, evenings are now to relieve his wife so she can relax a bit.

About the lens. My friend David lent me a super wide lens. At the widest it sits at 10mm (which on my camera with a 1.6 crop is the equivalent to a 16mm coverage).

I've never used such a wide lens before so I was exploring it's possibilities. It was hard getting into it at first but once I started to understand the lens behavior and it's associated idiosyncrasies, it was a lot of fun.

The best part is that you can take shots of people without them knowing because while it looks like you're aiming straight, the field of vision is so large that you can capture them without them knowing it.

Also there is a visible distortion at the wide end so once I started to understand that, it was fun like taking a shot of a person from a low angle makes them look very, very tall.

Cherax Crazy perspectives. I had a go with a 14mm recently, and was disappointed. Then read on a web site yesterday (the "pontificate" one) that wide angles are difficult to make. Your's look good anyway.

longimanus Really funny effects as a result of the wide angle lens! Those endless legs and arms :))) You must definitely try this lens outside on the streets among large buildings or in nature... (a friend lent me once the same lens mainly for underwater - there the effect is not so extrem as underwater everything appears larger and closer - but I tried it on land too (see my entries 14 and 15.11.2007) it was real fun! I am sure your collegues / friends appreciated their fun look too!

MrYum Good effect of using a super wide angle lens and closed to the object. I love the lower angle of view to give a wide vision.

jenjung really interesting to see how the pictures look with the wide angle lens. I've never used one before.
