A Ria aqui tão perto... e estas pérolas populares, mas é cada erro nas palavras que só dá para rir duplamente!
We didn't want to do the translations (of the captions in the boats) just as we posted these because they are complicated (lots of innuendos and play with words and double meanings - even spelling mistakes there)...
but after Subash asked us the meaning of "quero ver a enguia" we realized part of the fun was being missed... although now we still think some of it will be... lost in translation! :)
so: what follows is:
- first, the sentence in portuguese with the proper spelling (sometimes quite different from what's written in the boats)
- and then the sentence in english with one or two possibilities :)
~~~~~~~~~~
# 6 -» o amor é um fósforo: dura enquanto há pau = love is a match (matchstick): it lasts while there is a stick (boner/stiff you know what)
# 7 -» deixa-me tirar o leite = let me take the milk (milk you)
# 15 -» é crise! ninguém me pega na gaita = it's a crisis! no one gets (holds) my horn (stands for you know what)
# 16 -» vende-se como novo = for sale like new
# 19 -» deixa-me meter as batatas no rego = let me put my potatoes (you know what!) in your ditch (you know what!)
# 21 -» deixa-me montar = let me ride / mount (you)
# 22 -» quero ver a enguia = I want to see the eel (stands for you know what!)
# 23 -» regresso ao lar = return home (and it has the symbol of the portuguese football team as well as the flowers)
We also thought it would be helpful to bring here a copy of the comment from our Flipados team member Primavera about these special boats:
"(...) These excellent images, bring to us the beauty of the Moliceiro boat.
The Moliceiro boat transports aquatic vegetation, called “Moliço”, through the shallow canals of Ria de Aveiro (estuarine lagoon extending parallel to the sea with a length of 45 km and a width of 11 km.).
These boats, constructed with the wood from pine-trees, are decorate with naif paintings of popular flavor, with a legend/text of satirical, romantic or religious character. Local families, living and working together, have built, decorated and worked these unique boats over many centuries!"
