The pineapple is a very popular offering the Chinese, particularly the Hokkien give to the heavenly gods. The word pineapple to the Hokkien is called "Ong Lai" loosely translated to, "welcome to prosperity".

Since Penang is an island, the more popular mode of transportation and a rather affordable one is the scooter... although since the bridge was constructed many years ago, cars now outnumber these 2 wheeled contraptions.

Common sight in Penang.... not sure if these squatters are legal or not now, I guess they are now, not sure.

Everything in Penang goes under chain and lock, especially homes. Grills on windows are also common... for good reason, to avoid theft and burglary.
