signs of life

2006.12.08

The alternate title is
"thetimeIwenttothecemeterydidn'ttakeanygreatphotosandwasalmostkilled" (there is no punctuation, because it is always said very fast). I went there to take photos of really interesting late 19th century statues and mausoleums.

This group of cemeteries is two long rectangles, bisected by a road. I knew that people who appeared to be drug dealers liked to hang out on this cemetery road, away from the main road and prying eyes of the police, but I mistakenly thought they would be asleep in their beds at 7:00am on a Sunday morning. I was wrong. The cemetery and road were empty the entire time I was there. However, that changed when I began to leave. Right as a gentleman headed towards me with a look of determination (to make a business transaction? to steal my car and camera? to say hello?) a police car turned into the cemetery, the man moved away, and I scurried to my car. ** I wasn't trying to take his photo, in fact, I was leaving the cemetery, and had tucked my camera into its case when this happened. This was about a month and a half ago. I have been much more careful and aware since then and no longer assume that bad guys take breaks.**

Here is my only salvageable shot from the morning!

rcharris Great composition, detail, balance and colour and light, best appreciated in full size. Love both titles!

deleted062007 Wow, you are so lucky!! We are getting more violence here in Canada, especially here in Toronto (sign of the times) - however, when I compare the crime rate anywhere esle in the world, we are still extremely fortunate here. Generally, we can walk the streets at all hours of the day and night, everyday - but there are a "few" pockets that even I will not go during the night. When I talk about freedom - I gernerally mean the freedom to go anywhere as I please in my country without being harassed like this. BTW - love your "dangerous, almost being killed" shot! And are those berries edible?

daisymae I can so relate! I was taking pictures with my daughter in an abandoned lot of animal statues (don't ask) when suddenly I see this whole van-load of angry looking men headed straight at me. I was terrified. Picked up my 2 year old and started heading back to my car, which was like a mile away (it seemed.) When I turned around I saw them all sitting on the rhino laughing and taking pictures of each other.

daisymae In fact, I posted a picture of it today since you reminded me of it!

fequalma Ya, some people just don't like to be captured. Once you caught their attention, the natural expression gone. My experience,so far, is not as bad as your.. ;)

Shamana Beautiful shot, especially with the berries! And about your story, I was scared just reading it...:D
Shamana · 2006-12-08: 12:33
BuzzBomb I've never taken a shot under pressure like that, nor have I been in such a situation. I was watching a movie on a friend next to the Rio Grande, and a car full of drug dealers came by looking for something, but they seemed content to leave us alone, we were just leaving.

It seems like the graveyard is a dangerous place to be. The graveyard here is just a place for drunks and stray dogs to hang out.

But great picture despite everything. Next time I'd pack a shotgun, it *is* Texas after all isn't it. :-D

jerrymapictures There are indeed some great photos to be found in many older, established cemeteries. Be careful and be aware of the fact that some families may consider your photos a invasion of their privacy. Have fun with life!

mugsycat This is a great shot because you kept your camera, and that scumbag didn't lay a finger on you.

Overexposed Hmmmm doesn't sound like a gentle man to me.

aggiechristine I'm giving the guy the benefit of doubt ~ he could have been coming to tell me that it wasn't a good place to be. Whatever his intent, he alerted me to the fact that I had foolishly put myself into a dangerous position!

jjimson Eerie story. Its funny how our mind behaves. For most people (me included) fear would be the first thought what comes to mind given the circumstances (place, warning about the people there, the time), but in retrospect we do end up wondering if we were right in thinking like that at the time.
