reflections on the race

2007.01.26

Special thanks to Leap, who answered my question, "How do I stop white birds from looking like white blobs?" Answer: high shutter speed with flash.

To quote Leap:
"You have to use faster shutter speed to stop the action - very much like a strob light. The slower the shutter speed the more blur you will get. Also use the flash even on a bright day - it will allow more light so you can use faster speeds. Stop action is about 1/250 to 1/500 sec. 1/100 sec is OK, but not as effective."

These are my first experiments. One thing I found using the faster speed (on my non-DSLR camera) is that shutter lag REALLY increased. As always, constructive feedback is greatly appreciated!

Shutter speed: 1/500

deleted062007 Oh Christine, these are so beautiful and so beautifully done. I am so glad that I could be of help (technical only). It is amazing that that a single comment could produce such results!! I thank you for your acknowledgement - but the photographers eyes and their heart did this! I stand up from in from of my computer and give you a roaring standing ovation, and clap softly so as not to scare them away!! Excellent series of shots and extremely well done!! I believe that these is your best piece of work on nature thus far!!! - Leap

antre99 Christine, these are some greast shots! You've really captured the eagerness of the birds trying to beat each other!!

photopoet Thanks for sharing the tip. These are beautiful. Where were they taken?
photopoet · 2007-01-26: 18:28
aggiechristine They were taken in Armand Bayou (located in the Houston/Pasadena area), which is the largest urban wilderness preserve in the US (2500 acres of the natural wetlands forest, prairie and marsh habitats). I usually go kayaking in the bayou, but since I've gotten my camera, I've stuck to hiking around it instead!

jpfromoz elharris said it best - ah the serenity. Nicely taken and put together "complete" work.

jorgen Very neat set!

The flash won't make any difference at all if the subject is more than a few meters away. Just use the high shutter speed; I would guess even 1/125 would be enough for this.

Caiti these are quite lovely
