Spalted Birch

2008.04.11

I found this birch piece in the woods a couple of winters ago. It was about 8 feet high (dead) and had some very interesting knobs on it. The next time I walked out that way I took my hand saw and cut a 5 foot piece and hauled it home...man, I must have wanted it bad cause it got really heavy after a couple of miles!! I cut the end yesterday and found this little gift inside....nature is quite the artist, huh?

LastFrontier This is just beautiful. Thanks for sharing. I don't think I would ever see an unpolished inside pattern -- outside of a gallery. An unpolished pattern with texture makes it so much more beautiful to me. I would love a larger pixel image to put on my wall. Care to sign and email?

signsnwonders It's an amazing piece of art both from nature and yourself.

lexlevans it's way cool!! you dragged it for a few miles - haha, cracks me up. the things we do for fun treasures... i wanted to do a project with my students using stones from lake michigan a few years ago and hauled about 90 fist sized stones up the dunes in a very heavy bag... :-)

MHJphotos Fantastic Ellen! I bet you were VERY excited after cutting into this and discovering the gift that had been given to you for carrying this huge piece of wood for miles. How big is this piece? I bet it would make a beautiful coffee/end table.

I made some coaster's out of birch logs once with a very similar pattern. I bet something can be made to go inside your incredibly beautiful home!
