Okay here's the story on our accommodations: I found a link online to "Happy Neko". A traditional inn in Beppu. I inquired about the availability for some travel dates, which happen to be a super busy time because it's a national vacation week in Japan. "Bibo" promptly emailed me back and offered to reserve a tatami room for my requested dates at the price of about $22.50 a person, a night. Because he was so helpful and responsive, I decided to take a risk and and book the place. It was the best choice EVER. First of all, this is the garden view from our room...

This is the kotatsu room where we could just sit and hang out. The screens all opened up to a wrap-around, covered porch and sort of hallway.

Bibo was Czech and wore crocs all the time. Instead of providing slippers, like most Japanese inns would, they gave us crocs. This picture is titled "Crocs for Cara".

The bathroom. There was no shower or bath but that's because this was a traditional Beppu home. Beppu is the hotspring capitol of Japan, so people go to the onsen when they want to bathe. Which is what we did every morning.

This was our first onsen. We got a private hotspring with a sauna for our first round, just to ease into the world of onsen.

The Hells! These are the hotsprings that measure about 100 degrees Celsius which converted to Fahrenheit is over 200 degrees. Far too hot to dip into but way cool to see.

This was kind of weird. They had this pitiful little "zoo" staged at one of the Hells. It was too tiny. That's pretty common here though.

I love reading your blog. I am planning on coming over to Japan for 6-12 months to teach, and had been looking at places to stay while I travel. Your post has made me want to come stay at Happy Neko =] I just hope it's still running!!
