There is no song for this entry. I was SO tired yesterday I just couldn't shoot anything. I spent more time than I should have processing and organizing the 400+ photos I took the day before.

I took this at dawn. Its overlooking the Navy Medical Center in Bethesda, MD. I was on the roof of a building on the NIH campus. I was really taken with the colors mixed with the exhaust coming from the boiler stack.

Interestingly. The fuel mix ratio of this boiler is probably screwed up. Boiler exhaust shouldn't come out black. As I was capturing photos of this I noticed plumes of black smoke mixing with the white. The end result of this problem is that it is costing a lot more money to run the boiler plant than it should, and it will decrease the overall efficiency of the boilers.

Actually. I think technology has made leaps (don't mind the accidental pun) and bounds. What is lagging is the integrity of installation and construction of buildings. The knowledge is there. What happens is a great design is made and then an general contractor is hired. The general contractor then does 'Value Engineering' to save the project money. In a sense you get what you pay for. In addition, and unfortunately, building engineers often lack the skills and knowledge they need to keep equipment running efficiently. Some of its laziness. Some of its poor management. Some of its lack of funding for maintenance. Technology has made AMAZING strides. Now if society can educate the populous to keep up and if we as a society could work and live with better integrity then we would make strides. But now I'm just being political. This is what I do for living (not the politics though I it surrounds me regardless) so really I could go on and on forever. alexMachine · 2007-02-09: 11:05
