Cinque Terre

2008.06.30
Originally, we got the train tickets only to Genoa, planning to look at the city for a day. On the train, we decided that we should skip Genoa and head straight to Cinque Terre. We stayed on the train, standing at the space beside the toilets. We would find out later that the fine for being on the train without a valid ticket is 50 euro. But then, I thought that the female conductor looked cute and harmless and that convinced us to stay on until La Spezia.

Cinque Terre (Italian) is five villages lining the coast of the Mediterranean. The first and the last are 9km apart. We would see how the multi-coloured apartments and their green windows against the backdrop of steep slopes and shiny sea will continue to amaze us in terms of sights. And in terms of activities, trekking from one village to the next along the cliffs alongside the sea and swimming in the clear Mediterranean water were the perfect stimulus for the senses.

Cinque terre is known for its cliffs.

We left our larger bag packs at La Spezia train station, taking with us only our day packs and off we went to Riomaggiore.

And of course we did some swimming at Riomaggiore. It was a pebble beach, so we weren't quite happy with that. But the water is amazing clear and warm, and that made our day. Though it seemed a bit touristy, there were still lots of spaces for everyone.

We spent a few moments looking for a room for the night. But they were all expensive, starting from 80 euro for a room. We gave up, and we decided to take our sleep that night to the street or to the beach, and we could save some money too.

After swimming at Vernazza, we walked around looking at restaurants and shops until 7pm.

The access to the trekking route along the cliff costs 5 euro. We didn't want to pay, and we reckoned that the people at the guard posts would have knocked off by 7pm. We returned to the cliff trek route at 7pm and indeed they were gone and we trekked for free.

Our trek from Vernazza to Corngilia took 1.5 hours.

Strange plants along on the cliff.

Corngilia in sight. And Riomaggiore in the background.

Trekkers we met along the way.

That night, we were back at Riomaggiore. We used the shower by the beach and then went to sleep on the pebbles. The pebbles were surprisingly warm and the sky starry. It was perfect, except for the roaring trains that passed occasionally.

This Italian guy from Milan whom we met last night. Name is Marco. Now trying to flash his ass.

And the next morning at 6am before the guard post is opened, we went on the trekking route from Riomaggiore to Manarola.

The clear Mediterranean water never fails to make me happy.
