1890's Day Jamboree: Day 127

2008.05.24
The streets in Ringgold are lined with flags, and at the bottom of each is the name of a fallen veteran and the war in which s/he served. It is a humbling sight.

Ingenious use of a forklift - those are speakers on the platform. Ringgoldians are so clever and resourceful;) That's our lovely courthouse in the background.

Turkey legs are new to me....as far as buying them from an outdoor vendor.

I love his shirt.
It reads Homeland Security: Fighting Terrorism since 1492. He was so kind, and his music was mesmerizing. I bought a cd from him, and I hope to introduce it to my students next school year.

His girlfriend or sister - not sure which - made these colorful bags.

One last shot as we left.

Today was Ringgold's 33rd Annual Jamboree or 1890s Day. According to Catoosa County News, It is the largest outdoor jamboree in the southeastern United States. The festival showcases live music ranging from gospel quartets to country solos and bluegrass hoe downs. There are fiddler and guitar contests, a children's beauty pageant, and karaoke contests. A wide array of crafts line the downtown street. We saw original bird feeders, all kinds of jewelry, bags, and the infamous belt buckles that are so popularly sported by all sizes of men in the south. Then there's the food. The small town spills smells of funnel cakes, homemade ice cream, barbeque, corn dogs, and even turkey legs. I'm sure folks up in Chatt town could follow the aroma wafting through the gentle breezes that were so pleasant on this unseasonably warm day.

Kevin and I had a very nice time. The kids rode to the jamboree with their friends to avoid the cruel ridicule of being seen with Mom and Dad on a Saturday night. I believe our favorite part was meeting the Native American who played a hand-crafted cedar flute. It was simply beautiful.

Tomorrow will be a day dedicated to working around the house before our Memorial Day cookout.

Til then,
Julie
