Crossing rice

2011.10.08
pixel
Early in the morning, the rice is ready to be prepared for crossing. This is the more productive rice.

Ahmah cuts a part of the shell and extract the male pollen before the female is ready to mate

On the left part you see the more tasty rice and on the right the more productive one, ahmah and buha try to cross them in order to make a better variety

In a previous picture I show you the taro stem we cut and let dry. Ahmah mix the nearly dry taro stem with a mix of lentils flour and water and we made little balls and let them dry at sun. Now they become dark brown and we collect the dry ones.

This is the green hous, made of bamboo part

Of course we are fare away from the labs. This crossing is hand made, over years and years and years. You really need good eyes to take out the male pollen without touching the female....not easy and I was there with my young eyes to see if any male was left...thanks ahmah for the times she spend explaining me how it works ^_^
