These Old Stairs

I’m tired of climbing these old stairs.
They get steeper by the way.
About the time I near the end,
In mist, they fade away.

And some days they veer to the left.
On others, maybe right.
And it’s a crime, maybe theft,
That they’re mostly out of sight.

And whether the problem is with old bones,
Or the creaky, splintered stairs;
I’m too discouraged to pose a guess,
And it’s much too late for prayers.

I’m tired of reaching for the ring.
And for my keep to have to sing.
I’m weary of never seeing
Work be done,
And it’s up before the sun.

I’m tired of starting over;
Everyday to be on the run.
I want to be under cover,
Instead of under gun.

I don’t want to race against the night.
Or charge into each day.
Take orders from a boss,
Act contrite,
And give my life away.

I’m tired of climbing these old stairs,
And afraid of what’s lies beyond.
I want to sit beneath the sun,
And sip ice tea until the dawn.

I want to walk on pasture green,
With frolicking dogs along.
And quietly stroll on lane serene
That ends on duck filled pond.


I’m tired of climbing these old stairs.
