Very telling cartoon for me. Recently I looked after 16 Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese students. By English standards the Chinese were incredibly noisy soup slurpers. In the interests of future face I tried to explain to them that the louder the slurp the more frowned upon it was by the English. Theuy just looked at me in puzzlement. So I gave up and learned how to slurp my soup very noisily instead. One never knows when it might come in handy.

so fantastic! reminds me of when i was in shanghai in january to escort my italian grandmother home to detroit (she was visiting her son - my uncle - married and living in china) anyway - she was mortified that her 2 year old grandson would eat noodles that were so long and she kept cutting them when his mother wasn't looking, fearing he would choke on them. and i won't even get into her disdain that it wasn't PASTA. wow was she a handful. aahhhh mi nana bellisima.
