Once upon a New Year's Lunar Eclipse

2010.01.02
After a Rocky Horror screening and a trip to Kitano Tenmangu for the first prayers of the year I headed out to meet up with the players of the real event of the night. Everyone was chillin at a local basement Okinawan influenced Izakaya. Keep in mind that this is the first picture and it was taken probably around 3AM.

Interestingly this was the second time that week that I had to ask someone how to say Walrus in Japanese (seiuchi).

Soon it was time to depart for our group trek up Daimonjiyama for a 4:20 (pure coincidence I believe) "viewing of the Lunar Eclipse". Never mind the fact that we were late for the actual event and that it was covered in clouds anyway...

Head count time.

Julie came prepared for a symbolic gold painted Butoh Performance. Well either that or I edited the crap out of the photo.

Hey Kyoto night view, what's up?

Okay so now we're here and... is that snow? Jesus is it really necessary to get that beautiful?

Worth it.

Some of our group came waaaaaaay better prepared and proceeded to make delicious camper coffee. Myself I just brought a thermos full of hot whiskey. Oh wait, I win.

Oh snap. No she didn't

Bubble Bobble! Wait, that means nothing...

Pure joy on that girls face.

FYI - that X is where they light a fire that lights up the big 大 character that we're on top of in August. It's something I'm really really really looking forward to.

Success!

And now, both as a shamanic ritual and as a source of warmth the girls engage in a "please come out moon because we came really high up to look at you" dance.

What's another good source of body heat? GROUP HUG!

Okay, so do you see the little pin prick of light up in the top of the picture? Yeah, that's the moon, kind of. It actually finally did grace us with its presence for like 20 seconds.

A couple days later I made a little pilgramage to my favorite chocolate shop but this time I instead went with one of their cakey concoctions. A blueberry tart. As you can see from what came out I made a fine decision. That thing was Holy Shit good.

Soon after it was off on a New Years bike ride into unknown regions in NW Kyoto. On this particular excursion Mirai and I came across this extremely charming little temple called Shodenji. One of the nicer parts of the temple was the rock garden which while extremely simple also had a very unique feel to it that only grew after sitting and appreciating it for a while.

Also, I don't have a picture of it (yargh) but the ceiling of the walkway of the temple is actually quite famous apparently because it was once covered in Samurai blood. Back in the Momoyama period there was a big battle in this area and many people apparently met their demise at the temple. Someone then had the bright/twisted idea to use the blood soaked flooring as the base to build a new ceiling. For sure you can still kind of tell that the wood seems a bit... off. This is the kind of thing you get when you go on random bike rides in Kyoto. Love it.

Apparently someone reeeeeeeealy loved their pet turtle.

Kyoto Northside from Ship Mountain.

Central Kyoto from Ship Mountain.

And Southern Kyoto extending down towards Osaka from Ship Mountain. Someone was too lazy to get out the panorama stitching program for this...

Mirai getting ready for our picnic on the mountain top. We were a bit ravenous after our long ride and then getting a bit lost in the woods.

And finally, a random traffic oriented play park. Pretty much this looked like the most awesomest park ever and I really kind of wanted to go play around in it. Perhaps I will sometime.
