Barbati Fort @ Cuttack

2008.04.20
This all that remained besides the mound and the moat...before excavations started.

Most notices in India would be tri-lingual.

The steps leading up to the mound.

The excavated walls have such sharp corners!

There are some settlements/residential buildings right next to the mound. I can't believe the govt actually allowed it...but some of them were constructed by the govt itself!!

This looks at the small museum towards one end

Bad. Govt buildings right next to the excavations.

This is a place of worship. The tank is supposed to have an underground tunnel to Puri (may be exaggerated?!) which is 90km away...there are stories of how somebody would ask for food and trays of good dishes would arrive as if by magic...lots of stories...I hope someone (qualified) does write them down for us.

These are the ruins of a 14th century fort in a 10th century city. There is not much coverage on internet which is quite sad.
When I was a little kid, we used to pass by a huge mound of earth and people used to joke - "that's where the fort used to be. that place must be full of gold, diamonds and gems..."
The Archaelogical Survey of India undertook the task of excavating it. The 105 acre land around the 9-storey fort had a deep moat running around it. The excavations are on. There is a small on-site museum...these pics were taken in 2005...
The city is called Cuttack. The fort is called Barbati. It has a fantastic story...

Maxine Great photos! It looks like a really good place to visit. The only place I went to in India that was even vaguely similar was Fatehpur Sikri but it was such a hot day and all fellow-travellers were sick, so unfortunately we didn't stay long.
