Dhanraj Pillay (born July 16, 1968) is a former field hockey player and was the captain of the Indian hockey team. He is the recipient of India's highest sporting honour, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna award for the year 1999-2000. He was awarded the Padma Shri, a civilian award in 2000. He is the only Indian to play in four Summer Olympics, four World Hockey Cups, four Champions Trophies, four Asian Games, and four Asia Cups. Dhanraj is one of the most gifted forwards of his era with a small frame and flowing locks, he could wreak havoc in rival defences. He was the winning captain of the victorious Asian Games 2002 hockey team. He was treated rather shabbily by the Hockey regime of the country, headed by M S Gill, but he showed his class when ever there was an opportunity.
Pillay is currently working as Assistant Manager in Indian Airlines.
Today is the moment when he came to IIT-Bombay to meet and trained us (Hockey Players). Its was really a joyful moment.
Dhanraj Pillay is my hero too, i watched him play several times when he was in Malaysia, semi-finals of the commonwealth games in 98 Malaysia, was a great game, in that game he practically threw himself, body first into a shot when everybody just stood there and waited, a definite hero with heart!
