And your sinking leaf picture reminded me of a talk i heard at a conference a year ago or so. by a guy from duke, steve vogel, who had worked out some of the hydroplane mechanics of a kind of ivy leaf that had evolved to be able to survive the periodic flooding that happened where it grew... by creating lift and rising to the surface of the flood, thereby reducing the surface area in contact with the relatively high viscosity water, thus reducing drag and as a result, not being uprooted! oh well, thought you'd like the story. jameswaters · 2007-08-31: 03:20
