I see your post and listened to the song, to see if it was as I thought -- Leonard Cohen is a Jew, and the song was a reaction to the Yom Kippur war, when Israel was attacked on the holiest day of the year, when everyone was in the synagogue. The words are taken from a prayer we say then, "Unesane Tokef" -- The lyrics and tune are a traditional song for Yom Kippur, not Cohen's own. He altered the words "Who shall perish by water and who by fire,Who by sword and who by wild beast,Who by famine and who by thirst,Who by earthquake and who by plague,Who by strangulation and who by stoning,Who shall have rest and who shall wander,Who shall be at peace and who shall be pursued..."
