Travelogue Part 27 Barber's Mosque, Kairouan

2010.03.10
pixel
This most sacred city in Tunisia used to be the capital of the country between 800 and 1057 AD. It was named Kairouan (meaning caravan) back in 670 by an Arab leader during the Arab conquest of the region. To this day, it is a purely Arab and Islamic city, and up to 1881, the time of the French occupation, Jews or Christians were not even allowed to enter the city.

Zaouia (burial place) Sidi Sahab, or the Barber's Mosque is a delightfully decorated edifice, built in the moorish style. The mosque was erected above the tomb of the Barber of Mohamed, The Prophet.
Later the body was moved which made it possible for non-Muslims today to enter this beautiful place at all.
