18th Century Settee, Venetian Workshop

During the weekend we visited the current exhibition in the Memphis Brooks Museum, which features Venice In the Time of Canaletto.
I managed to sneak a single picture of this ornately carved back of an upholstered bench without being thrown out of the exhibition...
Coming back to this post later, I am just now realizing the allure of this piece to me: the colors perfectly echo the colors I recently chose for my blog, and subconsciously I must have thought it would look good in here. But I was also taken by this strange mix of Oriental motives and early (like about 150-200 years' early) Jugendstil design elements. Oh, those decadent Venetians... could they have been the predecessors of Art Nouveau?

Wow, it's so beautiful! I hate it when they won't let you take pictures. What's the harm, especially if you aren't using a flash.

yes, I'm very angry when someone forbid taking pictures or they ask to pay extra when you want to make pictures.terrible discrimination!
