Kepaniwai Heritage Gardens

Continuing from yesterday's post, also in the same valley, where those bloody battles were fought, now stands a remarkable Open Air Museum and picnic area called Heritage Gardens.

It was very interesting to read about the history of immigration into Hawaii, and to see the typical houses and gardens of the differnt nationalities.

The first Japanese immigrants were brought in around the middle of the 19th century to work the sugar fields.

Korean Gardens commemorate the arrival of Koreans in Hawaii.

Behind the big buyan tree there is the Portugese house and Garden.

Due to the devastating tsumani of 1918 in Puerto Rico, that destroyed most of the sugar cane crop there, there was a wordwide shortage of sugar. Puerto Rican sugar workers were imported into Hawaii to cope with the increased demand of sugar production shortly afterwards.

"Located in the lush 'Iao Valley, Kepaniwai Park's Heritage Gardens was established in 1952 as a showcase for Maui's diverse heritage with ethnic houses and gardens representing the Hawaiian, Portuguese, Japanese, Caucasian and Filipino cultures. In 1994 a community of volunteers completely restored the gardens to its original beauty."
