On That Famous Road To Hana

So I made Eva stop the car and I got out and diligently took my own pictures there... -for lack of room, only one close-up shot can fit in here now...

The road to Hana on the Northern shore of Maui is only 68 miles long...
|
...but it has over 600 sharp curves and over 60 bridges, most of which are of one lane... so it is understandable that the average speed is about 10 miles per hour that tourists unfamiliar with the road can attain... which tends to drive the locals really crazy... luckily this is a very sparsely inhabited area...
|
Where a waterfall almost meets the ocean! (Due to lack of rainfall, the waterfalls were mostly trickles now...)

The road to Hana is like LIFE itself: it is not so much the destination that makes the trip worthwhile but the process of getting there.

No matter whether you are coming or going, you reach this exact point on the road just at about lunchtime...

...where you find Surf Dude and his establishment, the BBQ Aloha...
This is the only place where you can buy any food along the whole three-to five hour trip...

Now, looking at it from the outside, you have to have a lot of faith to dare to order food here...
but Boy am I glad I was brave enough to try!

This guy, who simply called himself Surf Dude, served the absolute best -tasting $10-Teriyaki Chicken BBQ Plate Lunch with Rice and Slaw I have ever had!!! If you ever drive there, make sure you try it, it is GREAT! -And tell him, the 3 Hungarian Girls send their best regards...

The road keeps climbing up steep mountainsides..

..through lush rainforest...

...with great views to the ocean...

or waterfalls on the mountainside...
|
...covered with colorful vegetation.
|
Getting close to the black sand beach of Hana now...and that is where we pick up tomorrow...

Fabulous again, Agi! Too bad about the rains though. I've been on Kaua'i twice, once with a drought and once with the rains. Waterfalls were much more spectacular when it was raining a lot!

LOL... before I had the opportunity to start reading your post, I was saying to myself, "I photographed those same trees!" Too funny! Sadly I see we made a mistake by buying a picnic lunch to take on the trip... you found a great place to eat, our picnic was not so exciting! Great shots, Agi!
