In The Intermission

2011.12.11
pixel
The Metropolitan Opra House opened in 1883 and its first production was Charles Gounod's Faust that was based on GOETHE's drama by the same title. In spite of the fact that this was a very popular opera at the time, the Met lost over half a million dollars in its first season.
Today, with globalization and new technology, the HD Live Broadcasts from the Met make it possible for people all over the world to see Met performances live in movie theaters in their own cities, thus creating additional revenue to the theatre.
Last night in Szeged, Hunagry I saw Faust in a German/ Canadian production from the Met. Canadian director Des McAnnuff placed the story between the two World Wars in the 20th century. The conductor was French Canadian Yannick Nezet-Seguin, while the two main male roles were sung by two German singers.
Marguerite was played by Marina Poplavskaya. She did a terrific job both acting and singing.

Faust was Jonas Kaufmann.
