Children's Theories on Extinction
2008.05.16
[A child constructs a volcano out of a box, cardboard and tape.]
This picture respresents an ongoing interest of the children I teach into prehistoric times. During the week we have been talking about volcanoes and how their eruptions are like a giant sneeze. Some of the children's questions have prompted me to find out more information online - the thoughts of 4-5 year-olds are amazing!
On another note, here are the theories of four of the children as to why the dinosaurs became extinct...
S: “An asteroid fell onto the ground and all of the dust blocked out the Sun and made the world dark and cold”.
E: “Maybe they ran out of food because it was so cold and the shops had closed, and then they died”.
G: ”Maybe it was a volcano and it erupted lava all over the place, and the dinosaurs went “oooch ouch” because the ground was so hot”.
M: “It was a big earthquake that made the world shake and crack”.
