Healesville Sanctuary
2007.12.01
(Matt waiting for the "Birds of Prey' Show to start). He was very keen on seeing this presentation, whereas I was wanting to see the 'Parrots in Flight' one. Luckily for us, both were being shown today :)

One of the presenters with a giant Wedge-tailed Eagle! (unfortunately this was as close as I could reach with the camera, it was truly a beautiful - and tremendously strong - bird).

And because I choose to (or at least I find them more interesting), these pictures are from the 'Parrots in Flight' show. This parrot is a young Red-Tailed Black Cockatoo. It takes them four years to reach maturity, if they are male their tail feathers will fall out and grow back vividly red.

Wait... before you get the idea that humans are on display too (!!), look behind me for a massive goanna (or 'Monitor' as they're known overseas) resting in a tree.

(We found a cute little ice-cream store in the town of Healesville - called 'You Scream!' - before heading back to Melbourne... yum!)

Matt and I went to Healesville Sanctuary (an Australia wildlife park about 50km outside of Melbourne) for the day, where the weather was absolutely perfect! Despite sunscreen, it still didn't stop me from getting quite burnt and gingerly sporting reddened shouders the next day.
It was also one of the first 'real' trips out with my Nikon D40x, so many of these shots are learning experiences (some successful, others not so). Didn't stop me wishing I had my trusty Lumix with me though, but I'm forcing myself to not bring it with me everywhere I go. :P

I haven't been there in ages!! Thanks for sharing! You are doing great on the Nikon! Mine is my baby!
Amazing pics! You photograph well. You should be a model. I once went to the Birds of Prey show at Healesville. I also went to a similar show in the Alice Springs Desert Park. Both were great!
