Earwig Makes a Move

2008.03.17
[Sunrise over Heidelberg, taken by Matt on the car ride home from the hospital]

Here's an interesting story for you...

Matt wakes up screaming at 6am on Monday morning, saying that there's something crawling and biting him inside his ear. After checking to make sure that he's indeed awake (and not dreaming), I have a good look and see a little black leg on the inside of his ear. All attempts to find the culprit fail and Matt, still in agony, lays crumpled on the floor.

Since it's too early for any of the medical clinics to be open, I take him to the local hospital, where thankfully triage sees him shortly after. Time is passing and in less than an hour I need to be at work, and it doesn't look as if poor Matt's problem is going to be resolved any time soon. I call the agency I emergency-teach at, and get them to send a reliever for my morning session.

Shortly after, Matt proudly walks out of triage with a tissue in his hand that reveals an inch-long EARWIG! (otherwise known as a 'pincher bug' in some parts of the world) Though I was fuming at the time because I would have time to go straight to work from the hospital, and effectively cost the Kinder quite a sum of money, puns won out in the end as we giggled about earwigs actually burrowing into someone's ear.

Hopefully work finds it amusing as it actually was! :/

PaperWings YIKES!! That story makes me itch a little. My brother had a similar thing happen when he was a kid. After staying at a friends house he kept complaining of an earache. Mom thought he was just trying to get out of church. :) She poured some peroxide into his ear and out came a cockroach. GROSS, right?
Hope Matt's feeling better now that his brain has been vacated!

Glad to hear Matt's ok! What an amusing story you guys now have to tell, I bet to some it will sound very far-fetched ;)
Peche · 2008-03-19: 02:11
focussed Um ok i always wondered about why those things were called earwigs....I cant even tell you how much of a panic attack I would have if something crawled into my ear!!!!!!!!!!! How horrid. Poor Mat.
I hope he plans on keeping it so he has evidence to go along with his story..lol
