A group of coastal fishermen seen catching shrimp with the 'langai or langgiang', a traditional bamboo-poled shrimp net at the Portuguese settlement in Malacca, Malaysia. 22/07/2010
The netting activity or 'melangai' only can be done during low tide of the sea levels. The equipment are simple and made from shrimp net and 2 pieces of bamboo-poled. Their catch are from the shrimp and small fish. For the shrimp, it's sold as a live fishing bait.
For certain season, there is like a fiesta among the fisherman along the coastal of Malacca for netting the small and tiny shrimp or call 'geragau ' by the Malaysian. At some place along the coastal of Malacca, the fisherman can harvest more than hundreds of kilos of 'geragau' during that season. But that 'geragau' season not happened every year, only a few months for every 3-4 years. This year season just ended a few days ago.
