Godavari River at Nashik, India

2008.03.04
Meeting of the masses along the various walkways and bridges that follow and cross the Godavari River in Nashik.

Dipping fifteen feet of colored fabric into the Godavari.

A man brushing his tooth in the early morning.

A woman putting on her sari after it dried.

A family sits in the cool waters of the Godavari.

Big bellies need soaking too...

Swimming down the main channel.

Spic-n-span.

Deep thoughts...

A quiet resting place among the hoards.

Mother with child.

Hare, Hare...

An elderly woman leaves the bank of the Godavari, while another is just getting started.

Lord Hanuman.

A sadhu rinsing his robe.

Almost anything you want, and most of what you don't can be found among the hundreds of make-shift stalls and booths at various points along the river.

Each day thousands of locals, pilgrims and tourists gather (or wake) at this spot to bathe in the sacred waters of the Godavari River. Some also wash clothes, sit, swim, soak, brush their teeth, etc.

The Godavari is second longest river in India (Ganges).
