Varanasi (Banaras), India

2008.03.14
United Colours of Banaras. Saris placed on the ghats to dry under the morning sun.

Varanasi at sunset.

(Opposite view) Banaras under a hazy sunset. The fires and smoke from the smaller cremation ghat can be seen on the shore at upper left.

Boats tied along the shore.

Man tending to his herd.

Praying to the River Goddess.

Women and children sitting in the shade to escape the gripping rays of the sun.

A holy man performs during sunrise.

A man receives a dry head shave by the steady hand of a young boy. Take it off!

A snake charmer wallah working his way through the crowd on the main ghat.

Ganga tins for puja.

A Naga Sadhu, or naked holy man, squeezes his dreads before his puja can be complete.

The Naga Baba prepares to enter the Ganga, chanting his verse.

Lord Ganesha.

Two sadhus resting on the ghats.

A Euro Sadhu at peace during sunrise.

Looking upon the ghats from the river, early morning.

Group outing on the Ganges.

Fuel for the pyre... This boat is supplying timber to the main funeral ghat, where bodies are cremated 24 hours a day, seven days a week. No fewer than six bodies at any given time.

Flute wallah giving a pitch.

Aiming needs some work - a spitoon outside a temple.

Kingfisher.

A parrot in the same tree.

Women gathering near the water's edge. Their fabrics are stunning.

More boats along the Ganges.

Noon at High Street, Varanasi.

Om Shanti mural.

Golden Buddha with monk in prayer at Sarnath, one of the birthplaces of Buddhism. Sarnath is within rickshaw distance, maybe 30 minutes.

Varanasi, one of the oldest cities on the planet, is a wonderful place for color, but it will test each and everyone of your senses. Here are a few shots from the previous seven days.

bettyluvsduncan I was sorry to hear that you lost some of your shots. These however are awesome! You have a great eye for catching every day occurrences and making the interesting.

Number 3 is one of my favorites. I like the perspective you caught. In #5 you can see how much this man cares for his oxen. To get in the river with them and clean their ears! They seem to be rather enjoying it!

#17 is another of my faves. I like how you captured the image looking up from the river. I love nature too, so of course I love the bird shots... and they were in the same tree?! Nice!

The women are all beautiful. I love the brightly colored clothing. Even though you do an amazing job capturing their daily life, and the pictures are great, I sense how hard their life is. Puts my life into perspective. All of the blessings that I have (we as americans have) that we sometimes take for granted.

I most likely will never get to travel to India. Thanks again for sharing your trip with us!
