What you see here is Grandpa Nystrom installing baby-proof clips to the kitchen cupboards within Kelyn's reach. Previously, Kelyn was "allowed" to have free reign, which meant systematically emptying each cupboard space of all contents on a daily basis. Kelyn was later quoted as saying, "Not only did Grandpa take away the only thing that brings me joy in my life, he made me help." Grandpa indeed felt much guilt when seeing Kelyn's disposition turn from disorientation to frustration to demanding anger.
