I've wanted a remote shutter release for years. They just always seem too expensive for what you get, 50 cents worth of cable, connector and a switch. The one for my current Pentax SLR is $40 or so.
I recently stumbled across a thread on dpreview.com about building your own. There was a pointer to
this article. A little googling turned up quite a few articles, some with fantastically well built releases that must have cost $50 or more in parts.
Anyhow, I had a spare cell headset that I scavenged the connector from a few weeks ago. I had resolved to spend $0 on this, or at most, a buck or two buying some switches from a garage sale.
Yesterday, I stumbled over this
Flickr page using a mouse for the switches. It turns out the spare mouse I had wasn't so easy to open and it didn't survive the operation. But, I salvaged the switches and now have the world's ugliest (and cheapest) remote shutter release.
