The flaky bark and just a touch of backlit glow were my deciding factors for this photograph.
-February Monthly Reflection-
After so many years in school only working in black and white traditional photography, it is very liberating to use color, digital color. That being said, I do find it helpful to desaturate an image so that I can adjust the contrast without being distracted by the color. After I have made my contrast changes to the image (so that I have rich blacks and clean whites with the right amount of texture) I bring the color back and like magic the image is perfect.
I have learned that subtle changes in the angle that I am shooting can make a big impact on the final composition. These changes range from what is in focus to contrast issues. If the background in the image is too light or too dark some elements in the image will not have the attention-grabbing look that it would have if it had been photographed at a slightly higher or low angle.
