Practice Makes Perfect

2008.04.19

Do you think it looks bad that her head is cut off at the top?

This is my favorite

It seems I have plenty of photos of my own children but had none of anyone else's. So I asked my neighbor if I could borrow her child!

This is Jada Grey!

Jada and Kaitlyn are really good friends so I took them both out for a photo shoot. You should have seen them. LOL They thought they were on America's Next Top Model!

Please critic these photos! I really need some honest opinions!

Thanks.

focussed you did oh so good with these Alli!!!!!.. I just adore #8..the composition and the soft, even light in that shot is just beautiful.....Definitely my stand out fav in the set. Portraits in daylight are hard because of the shadows the sun can cast over the face. So if anything Id just say to try to be aware of the suns position.... #4 is an example of how the shodows can be a little distracting on her face........but thats all easier said than done. The overall feel of these is just so beautiful.
Love Love Love!!....

oldbabe I know nothing about portraits so I'm not going to be a critic or offer advice. I have my own problems ;-)

If I were mom and I was getting these as proofs, (do they still do that?) I would definitely get a copy of 6,8 and 9. I would also consider the rest after studying them for a while (depending upon how much they cost ;-) )

ambersunsets I am still learning with portraits, too, so no advice here.
However, number 8 is phenomenal. It definitely needs to be framed.

KerBear Allison, I think you did a beautiful job - I bet her parents will appreciate these very much. I do not think it looks bad that her head is cut off at the top in that second photo because you have framed her face very nicely.... which is the most important part... AND it's not like the entire top of her head is cut off... I think you got it at the right spot! :)
As well... my favorite is the same as yours.... I bet those two had a blast. Me and my friends would've loved an opportunity like this when we were little as well. Are you going to share the snaps you got of Kaitlyn as well?

mlcwikla They are all great. I love the one of her leaning against the post and the one with part of her head cut off (it ads alot of artisitc flair). :)

DancingDolphin I learned so much from critiques on my portraits ... I'm still not good but will offer my thoughts since you asked. :-)

The first thing that struck me is that some of her expressions seem forced, kids have a very hard time "smiling" naturally.

Light is so important...the really strong sun in #4 doesn't work for me.

I really like #6, personally I'd take out just a little of the background. Great pose, nice mouth & eyes, gentle light... nice!

But I really LOVE love love #9! She just looks beautiful, so innocent, especially in the white dress. If it were mine, I'd again take away a little of the background, maybe boost the color a little and work on the white to show a little more detail of her dress. But those would just be fine tuning things. It's a great shot!

Really well done over all! Isn't it fun to try something different!?

etodd80 Great job! Portrait photography is so hard. I agree with you, I really like #6. I also like #8 and #9 too. Some of the others seem a bit less natural to me. I do like #2 though, and the top of the head cut off looks ok to me. Good job!

Queen911 3, 4, 6 and 8 are my favorites. You are getting the hang of the portraits. I would purchase #8. Keep practicing. You have an eye for this.

Lindyart 6 and 8 are my favs ....great set and great portraits :)

Peche I love #9 - you have captured a more natural moment, a child's inquisitivity and her girl-like manners... I think the lighting is perfect and I like the framing as well.
All in all, a very great set and a great example of portraiture - it's not easy, is it??!! And I think you did a really good job :)
