Arizona - The Barons, Part I

2008.03.27
Just outside Sedona - I took this picture with my Go Go Gadget arm.

Mom at O'Hare - a pre-emptive donning of sunglasses (it was about 6am and 30 degrees outside).

Dad, already looking concerned about something.

Notice the gate is open for anyone to walk in . . . sort of like the Cubs' roster most years.

We originally thought this was Hohokam Park, but there didn't seem to be seats for 12,000 fans. Turns out this is Fitch Park, a practice field a couple blocks away from the stadium.

The Real Hohokam Park, in Mesa. Cubs vs. Giants, very early in spring training (March 2, 2008).

Paul and Mom. It was very windy that day, and by the fourth inning of sitting in the shade, we were freezing! So much for fun in the Arizona sun.

Pre-game preparations

Starting lineups

People filling out their scorecards. Little do they know that keeping score in a spring training game is an exercise in futility.

The line to get Ron Santo's autograph. It got longer, too, but he kept signing until there was no more line, about 45 minutes!

D-Lee!

Ted Lilly warming up. Why don't we call him T-Lil?

Our first glimpse of Kosuke Fukudome! I love how every article that mentions him ALWAYS includes a pronunciation guide (foo-koo-DOH-may).

I suppose it would not be a good idea to call him K-Fuk.

I believe he drew a walk in this at bat - give him time, he'll lose that ability.

By the sixth inning, we had moved to sunny spot.
