A pretty good trad jazz band 'entertained' until late into the night right outside our hotel window!!
The Venice of the North, St Petersburg is built on a swamp, with a picturesque canal system flanked by what were once wealthy houses and palaces.
The long-view towards the Church of the Spilled Blood, of which more in the next post.
The former winter palace of the Tsars, now The Hermitage, from the canal side.
Palace Square and the Alexander Column. This is where the revolution kicked off in 1917, with the Bolsheviks storming the winter palace.
The view back through the arch to The Hermitage.
The Pushkin memorial with the wonderful ethnic museum behind.
The River Neva and the remains of a wealthy city.
Peter Paul Monastery and Fortress - a beautiful place with a dreadful history which overshadows even that of the Lubjanka in Moscow.
Peter Paul Fortress with its unmistakable spire, from the Neva.
Interior of St Isaac ( or maybe St Kermit).
Some very interesting activities are prohibited!

Wow, I've always wanted to visit St. Petersburg! What a lovely old city. I adore #2, and that sign in the last photo is too funny - I guess you're allowed to walk naked in the winter? ;) Great set!
