Aztec Dance Ritual

The dance ritual, or "Mi’totiliztli", is one of the most basic representations of the artistic and cultural spirit of the Aztec people of Mesoamerica.

The dancers are clothed in elaborate traditional outfits made of colorful embroidered cloth and animal skins, often adorned with polished stones or mirrors and accessories made of shells and seed pods.

Most impressive are the headdresses, or “penachos”, made of feathers of pheasants, eagles or other birds, which in movement provide a mesmerizing effect to the movements of the dance.

Seed pods and metal bells are worn around the ankles of the dancers and serve both as instruments, sounding with every step of their dance, and as visual adornment.

I think you caught the "mesmerizing" effect in the last shot! : ) those are some really great headdresses and some awesome color! I have got to learn to use my camera better, your shots look great - i want mine to be too! (i have barely used it in the last couple weeks, been relying on the good old point n' shoot camera)

I think I will just come here and say "I love your photos" each time I visit!

How wonderful that they share their traditions. I just wonder if the younger generations take an interest. (I would love to know how to do Irish step-dancing or and Irish jig- part of my heritage- but no one is around to pass those things on- guess I'll just have to take a class one of these days ;-) )
