Forest Hills Cemetery 10th Annual Lantern Festival

2008.07.17
Forest Hills Cemetary (just outside of Boston) "is one of America's most historic and beautiful burial grounds." Each year they have a Lantern Festival based on the traditional Japanese Bon Festival. Zillions of Bostonians of all ages showed up to decorate a lantern with pictures and messages for lost loved ones, and float them on Lake Hibiscus, in the center of the cemetery, as the sun set and the full moon rose. I've posted the pictures in reverse chronological order so I could put the lantern pictures first - as you can imagine, it became increasingly challenging to photograph the lanterns. This is the last of the 128 photos that Brian and I attempted to take. Photo: Brian D.

The moon was incredibly clear - this photo doesn't do it justice, but you get the idea. It was spectacular.

Ok, now imagine you can hear the bagpipers that were performing behind us.

This one and the next one are where we launched our lanterns.

The next handful of photos are from around the cemetery - we wandered around while we waited for the sun to set.

mmm, dusk

They had several tables set up for people to decorate their lanterns, and have Japanese calligraphers write words such as love, peace and hope on the lanterns. This was probably one of the most fascinating community art projects I've ever seen.
